SOLAR PLATE ETCHING is a way of etching images into a lightsensitive polymer layer coating an etching plate.  Where ultraviolet light passes through an image to expose the plate, the photopolymer layer washes out of the surface coating, literally etching an image into the surface of the plate.  This can then be printed in exactly the same way - inked, wiped, pressed - as a traditional etched printing plate and gives the created image those same, tantalizing, textural and tonal qualities as traditional etchings.
